Sometimes, if you are lucky, you’ll find other peoples trash in unexpected places, in a drawer of an old dresser you picked up at a yard sale, in a box marked free stuff at an estate sale, or maybe even from a friend who happened to be on cleaning-out frenzy when you stopped by her house just to say hello.

Often times, you pick up things for a song at a garage sale and if you are like me, you say to yourself ‘one day I’ll use this or that for project.’ And occasionally something else you are involved in inspires you to get creative and the scattered pieces turn from trash and stuff into a keepsake treasure--and something you can share with others.

That’s how my “The Makings of a Garment” display box came about. After months of planning, promoting, and organizing a major fashion exhibit at the Charleston Antique Mall in Las Vegas, it was finally time for a small team of my fellow dealers to join me for the installation. It took us days, a lot of energy, and in my case, total focus on the job at hand. Oh, did I mention loss of sleep?

I really needed to relax, at least when I got home in the evening. Still unable to just drop the total mind-focus experience, I decided that a small creative project just might be the therapy I needed ---and there went my thoughts right back to the fashion exhibit. Garments! Garment makers! ! The small but important items that contribute to the making of a garment! Yes, I had these items at hand, well somewhere close by that is.

They were the type of items familiar to me as far back as I can remember. My mother, Jean Moretti, and my godmother, Angie Muli, were both skilled garment makers. So whether I was at home or visiting at my godmother‘s home, there would always be a sewing machine, spools of thread in all sizes, good quality scissors, measuring tapes, straight pins, cards of special buttons, button tins, ribbons and lace, small packs of notions, patterns, trims and all the necessities a good seamstress would have ready to complete a garment.

When I was about 13, my Mom sent me to classes at the Singer Sewing Machine Center. I was a real novice so be assured there were no accolades given for the first dress I made. So much for that. Over a decade later, as a young mother on a small budget, I was motivated to try threading the needle once more. And I did that using the 1940’s sewing machine my dear mother handed down to me in the 1960’s. I still have it.

As it turned out, my gatherings of garment making items are all treasures from my own past life or someone else’s. Someday I’ll do something creative with this stuff I’d say over and over again. It almost sounded like an excuse for not letting go. But, as I worked on my “comfort project” it became very apparent that the years of squirreling away vintage sewing items, the pincushions, the old zippers, thimbles, notions and such , served a duel purpose for me ---one, to hold onto memories, and two, to fulfill at least one of my “someday” dream projects.

I felt a sense of pride and contentment seeing The Makings of a Garment collection boxed and on display in the exhibit . To me, the final product spoke a tribute to my Mother, my Godmother and all those who labored to create and complete the fabulous garments featured in the 20th Century: 100 Years of Fashion Exhibit held in Las Vegas last Spring.
I’m a dealer in all things vintage. Apparently, a fellow mall dealer had tossed the old hat box. Thinking yes it had obvious flaws , there still might be a chance it could be restored or at least made presentable with some TLC.

The treasure from the trash went home with me that day. I placed the old hat box on my patio where I could get a much better look at it in the light of day. Oh, it was really pretty battered and there were lots of water marks and damage too. Darn. Oh well, I do love to decoupage old boxes and such, or it could be covered it with some really cool zebra paper saved for just such a project.

After a couple of days of eying the box and studying the possibilities, it was the designer name, Sally Victor, scripted on the rumpled paper-covered lid that kept drawing my attention. There is was again stamped in bold type repeatedly around the bottom half of this treasure-keeper. Curiosity took hold and put an end to any thought of re-covering this old hat box. Distinctly mid century in design, I ruled the battered box had plenty of character just the way it was. Even damaged, empty and abandoned, the hat box displayed itself as a piece of American fashion history.

So, now who was this designer Sally Victor? I hit the net, did a quick search and found a wealth of information about this renown 20th Century milliner. A TIME magazine article dated March 30, 1959, described the designer as one of the most successful businesswomen in the U.S., the biggest fashion hat maker of the times, a trend setter, and the only female milliner to win the Coty award, the fashion world “Oscar.” In fact, my research found she won the Fashion Critics millinery award in 1943 and the Coty award in 1944 and again in 1956.

So how did this woman climb to the top of the competitive world of fashion design? As her bio tells it, Sally Josephs was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania in 1905. She was one of six sisters who were taught to “sew, and sew well.” By her early teens young Sally was designing her own hats and clothes. At age 17, she went to Paris to study painting, stayed for two years and returned to Manhattan to work for Macy’s in sales, then moved up to assistant buyer. L. Bamberger & Co. hired her away and before long Victor was their head millinery buyer. She married New York hat manufacturer, Sergiu F. Victor, in 1927, quit Bamberger’s in 1929 to have a baby, then went to work designing hats for her husband.

In 1934, with a start-up stake of $10,000 and blessings from her husband, Victor set up her own shop. Since her designs were already featured at Lord & Taylor, the shop was an immediate success. Her “customer list read like the who’s who of the world famous.” Within five years her husband Sergiu closed his operation and joined his wife.

Armed with a background in art, the hands of a sculptress and the vision of wonderful head pieces that would flatter a woman’s face, Victor admitted she was often influenced by art exhibitions and architecture. Her Franco-Flemish mode designs were inspired by paintings from the museum of Berlin on exhibit in 1948 at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Victor designed pretty hats, net and floral designs, Easter bonnets, big sculpted Panama straw hats, very sophisticated designs done in felt, runway accessories for couture designers like Anne Klein and Hattie Carnegie, and the list goes on and on. The Victors also developed a subsidiary “Sally V” line of moderately priced hats for young girls. Later, Vogue launched the popular Sally Victor hat patterns.

Victor retired in 1966 just about the time when American fashion styles changed. Hats were out , suburban style was in. But her story didn't end there. Today vintage and retro fashions are “in” and Sally Victor Hats, and the many copied styles, are as desirable now as they were when the renown designer created them.

Ah, who would have thought this old hat box, tossed out by one and saved from the trash by another, would launch a brief but fascinating adventure into fashion history and allow a peek inside the life story of a treasured millinery icon named Sally Victor.

Sally Victor, 1905 - 1977.

This article by Ellie Clinton Issa was originally published in September-October issue of The Country Register in several states around the USA.

http://vintageinvegas.blogspot.com

http://vintageinvegas.blogspot.com
Ellie Clinton Issahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05373637006475584292noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9128839162710295159.post-73829460347788055532009-10-02T11:59:00.000-07:002009-10-02T12:05:05.812-07:00Vegas: Jewelry Show & Sale Charleston Antique Mall

Mark your calendars now for Charleston Antique Mall’s first ever Jewelry Show & Sale scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, October 10th and 11th. Ahead of the Curve, an intimate designer dialogue, featured Timothy Corrigan, Laura Kirar and Vicente Wolf, alongside moderator Susanna Salk, a style guru and Today show contributor.

“The trends revealed at Las Vegas Market are just a taste of what is energizing our industry, said Robert Maricich, President and Chief Executive Officer of World Market Center Las Vegas. “They represent a freshness, a new way of thinking and delivering design to the world. These pieces and looks will set the stage for what will be in demand for the months ahead.”

After perusing 5.1 million square feet of showrooms located throughout three inter-connected buildings, which contain more than 1,400 exhibitors product lines, the design experts discovered many distinct and noteworthy trends.

“It’s always exciting to uncover stand-out pieces and identify trends,” said Susanna Salk, design expert and Today show contributor. “Las Vegas Market offers something for everyone, whether it’s upscale floor coverings to chic furniture or affordable decorative accessories, it’s easy to find many items that reflect various styles.”

“One of my design principles is to mix classic with modern, so I’m thrilled to see that trend embraced and shown at Las Vegas Market,” said Timothy Corrigan, who was hailed ‘Today’s Tastemaker’ by Architectural Digest.

“In my work I always try to incorporate the handmade and the handcrafted. It’s wonderful to see that the work of the artist in design has become an important trend,” said Laura Kirar, founder and creative director of TRU Design and Laura Kirar Design Licensing.

“To deal with the present, you have to understand the past. My focus in design has always been to introduce a worldly aesthetic to spaces that are comfortable yet stylish. I am happy to see that this is a trend that is finally taking hold,” said Vicente Wolf, who was named by House Beautiful as one of the 10 most influential designers in the United States.

The Trends Revealed:
Into the Woods
From over-scaled, unfinished wooden vessels, to dining tables created from lychee wood to floor coverings woven with wooden tiles, the trend is to take one of the world’s most basic and natural elements and create something extraordinary that can be used in everyday life.
Unconventional Concrete
Not just for industrial use anymore, concrete is taking new shapes inside and out of residential spaces. Creatively designed and stained, concrete as a material is found in dining and living rooms, whimsical outdoor furniture and even residential console sinks.
Sculptured Sheen
Sculpted lines framing pieces with a glossy finish make up one of next season’s trends in design. Incorporated on bed posts, dressers and small tables, the juxtaposition of traditional forms to clean cut lines bring a sense of the past to the present time with a modern twist.
Mixed Metals
Gone are the days when metals have to match. Mix shiny and matte, mercury and mirror, or chrome with nickel to achieve a curiously bipolar look. Mixed metals are appearing on dining buffets, tables and decorative accessories like candlesticks and vases.
Trendy Turquoise
Though turquoise is ancient, yet again it finds itself back in fashion. Its shining sky blue is one of the most popular color trends for next season. Sofas, lamps, vases, accent tables, and even chandeliers are designed in the color turquoise, which adds a punch of color to any space.
The Natural World
Many designs seen at Market celebrate the pure and organic shapes and textures that come directly from the source: Mother Earth. Driftwood sculptures, raw linen shades, unfinished wooden lamps all represent a need to return to simplicity.
Unexpected Elements
Expect the unexpected with a new trend that pairs classic with modern, raw with smooth and polished with satin. A raw slab of wood with organic lines coupled with modern chairs can create a provocative dining room. Juxtapose a classic wingback chair with a contemporary metal and glass table. The end result is a modern, elegant and fresh look that both is timeless and current.
Ethnic without Borders
The essence and flavor of the world comes alive in this trend involving patterns, textures and materials. Next season’s accessories reflect an ethnic quality absent of a border or distinct origin. Whether it’s a vintage throw or an exotic outdoor market umbrella, the destination may be unknown but the feeling can’t be denied.
New Energy. New Look.
Smoke and mirrors are no longer the only way to create an illusion and change the look of something. Two effortless ways to draw new energy and generate different moods in a space is to use screens and mirrors. Whether they are small or large in scale, colorful or colorless, meant to break-up or unite a space, these timeless accessories are an easy way to update a room and transform its look.

From Ellie at Vintage in Vegas: I'm sharing the above article sent out from the World Market Design Center in Las Vegas. It is based on the lives of two women, the famous French Chef, Julia Child and a young women named Julie who challengers herself to cook every recipe in Child's book, The Art of French Cooking, and do it in one year. Meryl Streep portrays Julia Child--you will fall in love with the actress and Julia Child--and Amy Adams plays the driven young Julie.
If you haven't seen it go!! There's nothing like the big screen. Check out the trailer at http://www.julieandjulia.com/.

One Night Only, September 19: Lifetime Channel presents an original movie, Georgia O'Keefe, based on the life of the renown female artist. The feature starts off in O'Keefe's early years as a fiercely independent and then unknown female artist who falls in love with famed photographer and art impresario Alfred Stieglitz. Alfred becomes her benefactor and champions her artistry. They become lovers, but eventually the relationship suffers as O'Keefe becomes a rising star poised to eclipse Alfred's light. Alfred becomes vindictive in his attempts to emotionally wound her. Georgia's search for solace moves her west where she finds new inspiration for her paintings, and ultimately her own voice - in the New Mexico landscape.
Academy award and Golden Globe nominee, Joan Allen co-stars with Jeremy Irons.

Coco Before Chanel opens in major theaters September 25. Audrey Tautou stars as legendary fashion designer Coco Chanel. Based on the Chanel biography L'Irreguliere (The Nonconformist) by author Edmonde Charles-Roux. I've read another biography on Coco so I really get her nonconformist ways and I like her a lot. The epic features dresses from the Chanel collection.
See the trailer at http://www.sonyclassics.com/cocobeforechanel/-4k

Pass the popcorn please.

http://vintageinvegas.blogspot.com/

http://vintageinvegas.blogspot.com
Ellie Clinton Issahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05373637006475584292noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9128839162710295159.post-77550004051528173572009-08-19T09:20:00.000-07:002009-08-19T10:47:55.773-07:00Ellie's BackAfter several months of non-blogging I'm back. Carter, a member of the Las Vegas Paiute tribe, has been making Pow Wow regalia worn in ceremonies and dance competitions for about 13 years. Carter said that along with the movements and precision of the dancer, the regalia is part of the judging criteria in dance competitions.
The Jingle Dress shown in the photo above is predominately turquoise and yellow. The trimmings are metal cones made from tobacco tin lids to create jingling sounds as the dancer moves. The Fancy Shawl and the Grass Dancer Dress are also shown in the display along with many other Native American ceremonial regalia Carter hand created for her four children.
The display correlates with the 100 Years of Fashion Exhibit at the Charleston Antique Mall, 307 W. Charleston Blvd in Las Vegas. Open daily, the free exhibit runs through April 18, 2009.
For more information call, 702-228-4783.

http://vintageinvegas.blogspot.com

http://vintageinvegas.blogspot.com
Ellie Clinton Issahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05373637006475584292noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9128839162710295159.post-90302553888996661092009-03-25T08:40:00.000-07:002009-03-25T10:04:22.036-07:00Visitors at Vegas Fashion ExhibitVisitors had a great time at the opening of 100 Years of Fashion Exhibit at the Charleston Antique Mall in Las Vegas. The subject was Recipe Booklets, items I've collected since the 1960's.

The booklets often came with appliances and cookware, but

they were also acquired "with-purchase" or free at grocery stores like A & P and Safeway. You could get some of them for 10 cents or a quarter by saving box tops or labels and writing in to companies like Baker's Chocolate and Heinz. Others came from Cooperative Extension Services

at various Universities. Utility companies offered booklets too.

Inspired by the magazine article I decided to go through my own recipe booklet collection which

I treasure more for the heart warming memories the little books bring than the recipes inside.

Whenever I have time to browse through the stack, as I'm doing right now, fond recollections of

times gone by come to mind.

One example is a booklet by Sunbeam that came with my first Automatic Fry Pan. It was a

wedding gift from my boss at the company I worked for back in 1961 in New York City. The

bright red cover shows an illustration of a woman dressed in 1960 fashion holding the pan neatly

filled with fried eggs. In her right hand is the automatic heat control plug-in and under that the

statement that promises "Everything you cook will be more delicious because you get the

correct heat every time."

Another booklet published in 1965, Proof of the Pudding, came with General Foods introduction

of Jell-O Instant Pudding. No more time spent cooking pudding the old way when you could

create these great desserts made with a package of the instant no-cook version.

Two booklets by Baker's Coconut & Chocolate stir memories of my children's birthday parties--

for one birthday I know I made that cut-up Teddy Bear cake.

Since I grew up on Bond Bread and my dear mother, Jean, passionately baked using Duncan

Hines cake mixes , those booklets bring flashbacks of so many good lunches at the kitchen table

and the wonderful aroma of cake baking in the oven.

So one question is, do you have to be a cook to collect recipe booklets? Bonnie

Slotnick, cookbook dealer and owner of her own cook book store in New York's Greenwich

Village says that's just not so. In a recent interview on National Public Radio Slotnick said

reading cookbooks for the pleasure of reading cookbooks and not for cooking is very okay. I

couldn't agree more.

Another question is just how much should you pay for a retro recipe booklet? The

booklets are usually very reasonably priced starting at 50 cents up to a few dollars each. Some of

the rarest could go for $15. but I have yet to find any at that price.

Where do I find them today? Flea markets and yard sales are places to look but I find

antique malls and shops are even better.

Please join me on my next hunt for retro recipe booklets at the Orange Wall, my shop inside the Charleston Antique Mall, 307 W. Varney was here to celebrate the debut of his new book Houses in My Heart at the Las Vegas Design Center.

Varney's also published another wonderful book back in 2006 entitled: In the Pink: Dorothy Draper, America's Most Fabulous Decorator.

In my search for more on Dorothy Draper, I came across yet another interesting article that included a section titled The Elements of Draperism.

The Five Elements of Draperism

1. Intense color, bright colors and bold patterns.

2. Plant life, well maintained, as part of a decorative scheme.

3. Dense, textured carpet, for a homier ambience.

4. Striking details, a few bold accessories.

5. A roaring fire...the heart of any room.

According to the story in New York Magazine , as Minimalsim loses its' novelty, a new generation of designers , so-called modern-day Drapers, are keeping Ms. Draper's style of urban sophistication alive.

The How to Do It at Home section suggests the use of big mirrors with lots of flourishes, chessboard tiles, big patterned wallpaper, romantic furniture and harmonious fabric for color constrast.

New York Magazine/by Wendy Goodman/published March 19, 2006

To read the complete article , see a picture of the glamorous Dorothy Draper and full-color photos related to the topics I touched on here go to:
http://www.nymag.com/homedesign/features/16438

Want to create the Draper style in your home? Just head over to the Charleston Antique Mall where you can find romantic furniture, big flourishing mirrors, vintage fabrics and draperies, and those striking details like the bold accessories Draper may have used back in the 1930'-1950's.
http://vintageinvegas.blogspot.com
Ellie Clinton Issahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05373637006475584292noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9128839162710295159.post-26641835551254084612008-12-04T10:59:00.000-08:002008-12-06T19:00:09.161-08:00World Renown Designer Carleton Varney in VegasRenown interior designer, Carleton Varney, president of Dorothy Draper & Company was in town to celebrate the debut of his new book "Houses in My Heart." The special 1st Friday event was hosted by Robert Allen/Beacon Hill in the Las Vegas Design Center. (Yes, I started this blog the night before the event.)
The highly recognizied designer, Varney often speaks of his mentor, Dorothy Draper, with warmth, kindness and admiration as he did Friday in Las Vegas. I had to know more about this lady. So I searched.
Varney is quoted in an article on the design legend Draper, saying "Dorothy was to decorating what Chanel was to fashion." Draper, the first lady of interior decorating made her breakthrough in the world of design with the use of bold and bright colors, oversize prints and her anti-Minimalistic philosophy starting in the 1930's. Varney told Architectural Digest, " She took a world that was drab and dreary and made it colorful." Curious me read the complete article and several others, and became fascinated with Draper and Varney.
Here is the link: http://www.architecturaldigest.com/. Next type Dorothy Draper in AD's search box and it takes you right to several articles with photos on this fascinating woman.
You can view the Dorothy Draper & Company, Inc. site too. Learn more about the woman who started it all and the gentleman, Carleton Varney, who carried on the company name and Draper's philosophy of bright colors, floral flourishes and monumental-size design accomplishments. Varney is known for countless restoration and hotels projects around the world, his versatile line of lamps, dinnerware, crystal and linen designs and...his own line of fabric designs: Varney by the Yard. http://www.dorothydraper.com/
More on the Draper Style coming.
http://vintageinvegas.blogspot.com
Ellie Clinton Issahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05373637006475584292noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9128839162710295159.post-54508509195147693882008-11-25T20:40:00.000-08:002008-12-07T09:11:53.655-08:00Charleston Antique Mall Sale Starts Friday

The annual 15% off store wide holiday shopping spree

means all regular priced merchandise in the mall is on sale.

Sales runs through Dec.24

Charleston Antique Mall

Store Hours: Mon-Sat 10AM-6PM

Sundays 11AM-5PM

307 W.
